Pixel Together vs. WordPress: A Web Designer's Perspective

'Then there's worrying about constantly updating plugins and whether that will break your site; and moving sites between hosting companies because they are no longer good. There are a lot of things that can go wrong in WordPress - how long have I got?!'

'IT... JUST... WORKS. The amount of brain space and time saved in developing on Pixel can't be overstated. You are basically removing the development step in the process, which is wild.'

We already know of several very compelling reasons:

Ease of use. Pixel is a true no-code platform that allows users to create and customise websites without any coding experience, unlike WordPress, which requires users to have some coding and web development knowledge to get started.

Flexibility. Unlike most other website builders, who offer template centric options, Pixel Together provides a wide range of tools, layouts, and design elements that allow users to create truly unique and customised websites. With Pixel Together, users can easily move and align layers, tailor the layout of their website, and customise the design to suit their needs.

Security. For many users of no-code platforms, particularly those with development backgrounds, not having control over all of the code feels uncomfortable. Without complete control and a full understanding of the code behind your site, it can feel like a potential security risk.
However, when it comes to security, the opposite is the case with Pixel Together. Pixel Together keeps your critical information safe. We undertake regular penetration testing with security experts as well as, of course, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) security on all our sites. The security experts we employ and you benefit from would simply be out of reach for the budget of most small business websites built on Wordpress.

Support. Pixel Together has excellent customer support. Unlike WordPress, which is an open-source platform with no official support team, Pixel Together offers dedicated customer support to all of its users.

Our customers agree.
This month, we spoke to Seamus Ashley, a talented web designer and UX specialist working extensively within Pixel Together to find out what works best for him and what we could update or finesse. Specifically, we dive into the differences between WordPress and Pixel and why this customer switched many of his sites from WordPress to Pixel.

Tell us a little about the platforms you’ve worked with in your twenty-year career?
As every client of mine has specific requirements, I’ve used many platforms: WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Magento, Shopify, Squarespace, and created custom code. There are a lot of options around, even more so at the moment!

I’ve used WordPress extensively as it has always been a really powerful platform. I still build jobs with it. It gives unlimited flexibility for larger sites, which is amazing. ACF (Advanced Custom Fields), a plugin for custom data structuring, is also a tool I can't live without.

But using WordPress requires a lot of expertise, especially to minimise the problems the platform inevitably creates.

The Problems with WordPress

What are the problems you find with WordPress?
First off, even with all the great builders around these days, you still need to understand HTML and its structuring to use them effectively. Hosting and caching is huge; getting a WordPress site humming speed-wise takes a lot of time.

Also, I know it goes without saying, but the amount of times hackers have made my life a headache is a huge issue.

Then there's worrying about constantly updating plugins and whether that will break your site; and moving sites between hosting companies because they are no longer good. There are a lot of things that can go wrong in WordPress - how long have I got?!

Do you find plugins a good option to add flexibility to a site in WordPress?
It's way too easy to install a badly written plug-in, and then suddenly, your whole site gets buggy. As much as there is a plug-in to do everything, there are many problems with a lot of them. The longer I have worked with WordPress, the fewer plugins we try to use. I recently built a store for a client and found the perfect plugin for their need, but after installing it, it became buggy, and their support was basically non-existent. Having good support, like with Pixel, saves a lot of headaches.

When I found out about Pixel, it sounded interesting, maybe too good to be true! But after spending some time with it, I can report that it delivers everything it promises.

What Makes Pixel Together Better

What is it that you are finding better about Pixel?
IT... JUST... WORKS. The amount of brain space and time saved in developing on Pixel can't be overstated. You are basically removing the development step in the process, which is wild.

I'm really into all the new align and distribute features that have bought Pixel in line with a proper design tool; they make life much easier now.

With all the new layout tools that have been added in the last 12 months, for some jobs, you can now just design directly in Pixel without even opening another design tool at all. That is a huge time-saver right there. And when you have finished the design in Pixel, you have a website!

We aim to keep design and development efficient and intuitive while maintaining flexibility, an often overlooked feature of a no-code platform. So, it’s excellent you’re finding the platform so workable!
Is there anything you wouldn’t use Pixel for?

Pixel is great for probably 90% of websites out there. Where it would be limiting would be with a lot of custom data, custom templates, or 100+ page builds. But for so many sites, these are not required at all, making it a great fit for so many.

While WordPress has long been the go-to platform for website builders, Pixel Together offers many advantages that make it the superior choice. Ease of use, flexibility, security and excellent customer support make it an ideal choice for anyone looking to create a professional website, or suite of sites, quickly and easily.
