How to inspire creativity without having to take six showers a day

CREATIVE COMMUNITY

'The first step is to read far and wide. This is where we come in. Webb Young advises gathering materials and resources, think pieces and articles relating, even loosely, to your area of interest'

Before you file this under “read in my own time”, hear us out. Sorkin’s practices are theoretically backed by James Webb Young, a Madison Avenue advertising executive who literally wrote the book on creative processes. He outlines a three-step process to inspire creativity.

The first step is to read far and wide. This is where we come in. Webb Young advises gathering materials and resources, think pieces and articles relating, even loosely, to your area of interest. You know those fifteen browser tabs you’ve had open for a week? Yes, those could be it. Or, it could be a dive into our recent blog post on building a brand. Think broadly at this point – you don’t know where inspiration may come from.

Then, it’s about looking for connections between what you’re reading, what you’re working on, and what you’ve been planning. Think beyond the obvious. For me, this involves a screen full of stickies, which I come back to repeatedly to try and see fresh links. For others, a mind map app or physical whiteboard might be helpful.

The next step is the key. Do nothing. How often in your day do you really allow yourself to tune out, sans podcast, without scrolling and with no fixed purpose (and yes, it may be in the shower!)? According to Webb Young (and Lin-Manuel Miranda), these are the moments that allow the ideas you’ve been developing to come together.

So – whilst we can’t create moments of reverie in your workday, we can help you gather interesting articles and tidbits. First up, follow us on Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn for quick recommendations. For content that dives a bit deeper, settle in with another of our blog posts.

We’d suggest starting with our tips on how to nurture yourself throughout the day and make room for those light bulb moments.
